Netflix 90’s Movie of the Week:
Starring Halle Berry, Natalie Desselle-Reid, and Martin Landau, this incredible comedy follows two waitresses who have dreams of being more, mostly opening the first Soul Food / Hair Salon combination destination. Their aspirations take them from Atlanta, GA to Los Angeles in hopes of becoming one of Heavy D’s (RIP) back up dancers.
Seeing Halle’s character, Nisi, in the blonde wig and tight pleather outfits along with her bff’s, Mickey’s, incredible personality as they’re “livin’ large and takin’ charge,” is the perfect 90’s nostalgia. With great cameos from Bernie Mac (RIP), LL Cool J, Debra Wilson (from Mad TV), & Fazion Love, this piece is lovable for what it is. Roger Ebert said this film was “jaw-droppingly bad.” However, I know there exists a whole people group who will love and cherish this movie for being just that. It’s the corny and ridiculous movie you watch over and over again; it’s the Horrible - Fantastic kind of movie that is extremely silly but somehow even in that has beautiful honesty.
Enjoy!
